Optic Fibre  Design Specialist

The Optic Fibre Design Specialist Course provides advanced training in the engineering, modelling, and documentation of fibre optic networks. This programme builds on foundational planning skills and equips learners with the technical expertise required to design FTTH, FTTB, PON, metro, and backbone networks using globally recognised standards and South African regulatory requirements.

Learners gain hands‑on experience with GIS‑based route engineering, loss budget modelling, component engineering, and the production of professional design documentation, including splice plans, ODF layouts, fibre allocation tables, and full design packs. The course integrates various standards with local laws, rules, and municipal wayleave rules, ensuring that designs meet both international best practice and local compliance obligations.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to engineer resilient fibre networks, optimise performance and redundancy, and produce complete, client‑ready design documentation suitable for real‑world deployment projects across South Africa.

What You’ll Learn

  • Engineer fibre network designs using FOA, BICSI, ITU‑T, IEC, and SANS standards.

  • Conduct desktop and field surveys for FTTH, FTTB, PON, metro, and backbone networks.

  • Use GIS and CAD tools to create accurate route plans and design schematics.

  • Build advanced loss budgets, optical margin models, and performance calculations.

  • Select and specify fibre components including closures, ODFs, cabinets, and splitters.

  • Produce professional design documentation: splice plans, fibre allocation tables, ODF layouts, and as‑built packs.

  • Apply South African regulatory requirements including ICASA, ECA, OHS Act, Construction Regulations, and municipal bylaws.

  • Integrate civil constraints, servitudes, and wayleave requirements into design decisions.

  • Engineer redundancy, resilience, and protection paths for high‑availability networks.

  • Prepare complete design packs suitable for client submission and project deployment.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Apply international and South African standards to fibre network design.

  • Perform GIS‑based route engineering and feasibility assessments.

  • Engineer FTTH, FTTB, PON, metro, and backbone network designs.

  • Calculate advanced loss budgets and optical performance margins.

  • Produce complete design documentation including splice plans, ODF layouts, and fibre allocation tables.

  • Integrate regulatory, civil, and environmental constraints into design decisions.

  • Prepare compliant wayleave inputs and municipal‑ready design packs.

  • Validate design feasibility and optimise network resilience and redundancy.
